Baseball Betting Futures: Cubs, Giants Favorites for NL Pennant

The Chicago Cubs have been the favorites to win the National League Pennant at top sportsbook Bovada for the entire season. That could change soon if the San Francisco Giants have anything to say about it.

On the latest NL Pennant odds at Bovada the Cubs are still the favorite at +175. The Giants are creeping up on them at +275. Chicago still has the best record in the NL, but not by much. Chicago is 50-26, while the Giants lead the NL West at 49-30.

Chicago has been in a bit of a slump lately with only three wins in their last nine games. All six losses came against the St. Louis Cardinals and Miami Marlins, who have both risen up the pennant odds lately.

The Giants have also cooled off in their last few games at 1-3 in their last four. Even worse was that those three losses came against the Philadelphia Phillies and Oakland Athletics, two of the worst teams in baseball. Before those four games San Francisco had won 13 of their previous 14, so there’s obviously no reason to panic.

The previously mentioned Marlins and the Los Angeles Dodgers may be ones for bettors to watch on the odds going forward.

The Marlins have climbed up to second in the NL East and grabbed one of the Wild Card spots, They are 7-4 in their last 11 games, which included taking three of four from the Cubs. Miami has climbed back into contender status despite a painfully slow start by Giancarlo Stanton and a suspension to Dee Gordon. They have been picked up by a bounceback year from Marcell Ozuna and complete dominance from ace Jose Fernandez.

The Dodgers are an interesting case right now at +900 in the futures. They own the first Wild Card spot and they’re six games behind San Francisco in the NL West. They’re also a solid 8-3 in their last 11. None of that may matter if Clayton Kershaw’s back causes him to miss some time. Kershaw, the best pitcher in baseball, has been dealing with back pain for weeks and is finally headed to a specialist. If the Dodgers get bad news they could plummet on the odds list
