Final Four Odds: North Carolina, Villanova are Betting Favorites

The Final Four tips off this weekend with two matchups that most bracketologists likely didn’t predict. The only No. 1 seed still standing in the tournament are the North Carolina Tar Heels, and they’ll face the Syracuse Orange in the Final Four.

The Orange have been one of the biggest surprises of the tournament. In the Elite Eight Syracuse was an 8-point underdog against the No. 1 seed Virginia Cavaliers and pulled off a 68-62 win. They also took down the Gonzaga Bulldogs as a 4-point underdog in the Sweet 16.

The Tar Heels failed to cover in their tournament opener, but are a perfect 3-0 against the spread since, including an 88-74 win over the Notre Dame Fighting Irish as a 9.5-point favorite in the Elite Eight.

Not surprisingly North Carolina is a 9.5-point favorite at top sportsbook 5Dimes against Syracuse. Because both sides play in the ACC bettors have some recent history to draw on from this season. The Orange and Tar Heels met up twice this season and UNC won both matchups. In January the Tar Heels won 84-73 as a 7.5-point favorite and in the rematch in late February UNC won 75-70 as 12.5-point chalk.

In the other Final Four matchup the Villanova Wildcats face the Oklahoma Sooners. The 5Dimes oddsmakers expect this one to be close, listing the Wildcats as a 2-point favorite.

Villanova is a perfect 4-0 ATS in the tournament while Oklahoma is 2-2 ATS. Both sides were also underdogs in their Elite Eight matchups. Villanova was a 2-point underdog versus the Kansas Jayhawks and the Sooners were a 1-point underdog versus the Oregon Ducks.

This game is also a rematch from earlier in the season, which Villanova would like to forget. In December Villanova faced Oklahoma as a 5-point favorite, but was blown out in a 78-55 Sooners win. Prior to the loss the Wildcats had won their last two versus the Sooners both SU and ATS.

When the Wildcats have been favored by 2 points or less they’ve been a pretty safe bet lately. In their last eight games when favored by 2 points or less Villanova is 7-1 SU and ATS. The opposite is true for the Sooners as an underdog. In their last seven games as a 2-point underdog or less the Sooners are only 2-5 SU and ATS.
